Politics and Therapy: Exploring a Systemic Approach to Being a Therapist and Navigating Politics Within Yourself and Client Relationships.
For clinicians desiring to develop an ethical approach to working with their clients when politics is creating distress within them and between others. In addition, we will be exploring a variety of ethical dilemmas faced by our clients in our rural healthcare practices.
Curriculum Overview:
During this workshop, we will review the theory of Moral Intuition by Dr. Jonathan Haidt, which offers a critical new understanding of emotions and moral development. The presenter will facilitate an exercise called “Depolarization From Within,” which is designed to foster skills to diminish the effects of polarization encountered in political conversations. (Depolarization From Within was developed and shared via Braver Angels Organization). We will also explore Dr. Bill Doherty’s work of LEAP (Listening, Exploring, Affirming, and offering Perspective) when working with clients. We will end with a discussion of how we can practice LAPP (Listen, Affirm, Pivot, Perspective) personally and in our communities.
